Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
